I found a small treasure at a flea-market in the South of Spain, a box of glass plates with photographs depicting the inhabitants and daily life of Tangiers, signed by James Valentine. I became fascinated with the Idea of having them printed in large format. Thanks to the care and dedication of great professionals, this project is now a reality, and the result is extraordinary!
James Valentine, Scottish Photographer (1815-1879)
James Valentine established his photography business Valentine & Sons Ltd, in 1851 in Dundee Scotland. Over the years he earned international recognition for his pioneering production of postal cards. In 1866 his company was appointed as official provider of the British Royal House.
With his business he travelled beyond the boundaries of his native Scottland. Aiming to broaden the field of inspiration and enlarge the offer on the catalogue, countries like Norway, Spain and Morocco became subjects of his viewfider.
The photographs included in this presentation are part of a collection of glass plates which the entrepeneur and founder of Vintage Lab Marbella, Valérie Bibas, discovered at a flea market in the South of Spain some years ago.
With great care this project of large format prints, brings the beautiful images of daily life scenes in the Moroccan town of Tangiers aroud the 1870's to the light.
47 photographs of this collection are available for purchase, printed and framed in large format, as a Limited Edition of 15 prints of each original glass plate, with its corresponding certificate.
Each one of the prints made from the original glass plates has been produced at the renowed Madrid based photo lab AuthSprit owned by the photgrapher Manuel Castro Prieto ( National Photography Awards, Spain 2015)
